This Friday: it's 'sunset time

Click on image to zoom in.

Hot gig + new album:

Come this Friday December 18, local rock icons PLAINSUNSET will put out their most daring album to date.

Having thrived on the successful formula of simple structures, solid hooks and catchy sing - along choruses over the past decade; this is the band’s first foray into many things very different from what they’re used to.

For PLAINSUNSET, the entire process of putting the album together was a tough one from the start, but all worth it in the end.

“Collabor-8” will launch on December 18, 930pm in conjunction with Esplanade’s Late Nite at Esplanade concert series.

Having made some good friends over their 13 years as a band, the concert will feature PLAINSUNSET playing live with friends such as Sheikh Haikel, Amanda Ling (ex-Electrico), DJ duo Dubwise and more. They will also appear on PLAINSUNSET’s latest studio album released on the same day.

Expect a crazy rock party, as it normally is with any PLAINSUNSET show but this time with a slight twist on new songs meshed up with the different styles that each guest artist represents. However no PLAINSUNSET show is complete without the crowd favourite classics such “Find A Way” and “Girl on Queen Street”, so if you are a seasoned fan you definitely won’t be disappointed…

Tickets can be bought through SISTIC at $25.

For media passes, please contact Winnie Chan from The Esplanade at cwinnie@esplanade.com

We also spoke to Lim Teck Kheng, the dude from Universal Music, who was also there when the indie explosion happened (he too, was in a band, but refuses to tell us which one because he’s shy); and got them to talk about what they expected from this compilation."

Photo: We GANG

HAPPY NEW YEAH BABY feat. Pinholes, Etc, We GANG, plus!

When Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 8:30pm
Where P.O.W (The Prince of Wales)
101 Dunlop Street, Little India (between Sim Lim and Serangoon)

The very cool invitation reads:

Q: Should auld acquaintance be forgot or not?
A: Sorry! We can't remember! We seem to have lost a few braincells over the decade. What did they call them anyway? The "Naughties"? Didn't feel like it. Oh, the "Noughties"! Sounds like a load of zeroes best forgot... so let's kick-off the countdown clock early and bid the blues adieu on the eve of the Eve with these New Year dears:

** Pinholes - Well-dressed gents with the preferred mode of retro-a go-go to greet the future with a smile.
www.myspace.com/thepinholes

** Etc - Party like its 1999 (ie. worry about the Y2K virus, Nostradumus & whatever else you got)
http://www.myspace.com/abcdetc

** We GANG - Get friendly with dysfunctional family fun, as if Iggy went Pop with a chorus of hot blitzkrieg bops. Singalong a six-piece!

City Music Year End Sale

There's one sale we look forward to every year. No, not the Great Singapore Sale. We're talking about City Music's annual year end sale! We've picked out our favourite bargains at City Music but, really, you should go there yourself and see all the other stuff they have on sale.

We love the Korg SV1 Stage Vintage Piano (pic below). Its design is just retro sexy and the sounds are amazing! The 73-key version is on offer at $1925 while the 99-key is on sale at $2037.

AER is renowned for making incredible sounding acoustic guitar amps. Check out the Alpha Plus (pic below) - 2 channel, 50W - amp that's going for $984.

We all know about Zoom's H2 recorder. The Zoom Q3 (pic below) is that as well as being a video recorder. It's on sale at $375.

Other good stuff we saw are the Martin acoustic guitars, Vox guitar amps, Hartke bass amps, and various accessories on sale. Sale ends on 31 December 2009.

Gibson Guitar to Unleash the the Gibson Dusk Tiger on 8 December 2009

The third generation of Gibson Robot Technologies will be introduced on 8 December 2009 (Singapore time) at only 200 retail sites worldwide. There will be a limited run of only 1000 units produced. There will be 200 store sites – 100 in the USA and 100 in international markets. Each store will receive 5 units. No more will be manufactured or sold.

Last year Gibson introduced the Dark Fire guitar, which followed the first generation Robot Guitar. This single model was hugely successful, with most stores worldwide selling out of the instrument in one day with a worldwide stock out in two days.

The Dark Fire’s ambitious level of innovation, however, caused enormous problems in manufacturing and some issues making it to the field. Gibson stopped producing the Dark Fire after approximately 100 reached consumers and initiated a complete redesign. The great difficulty of this very high-tech guitar has only allowed about 500 units to be made in 2009 with a possibility of 1000 more being shipped by the end of the year. Virtually all of these instruments are sold, and Gibson does not intend to produce this model again.

The Dark Fire introduced three significant innovations, all of which are incorporated into the Dusk Tiger:

1. The Robot 2 tuning system, which increased both the accuracy and speed of auto tuning.

2. Chameleon Tone Technology, which allowed the guitar to achieve all the classic guitar tones, with 7 classic tones immediately available.

3. The first guitar that came as a complete system to harness the power of a computer recording environment, as well as computerized live settings.

Throughout the year Gibson’s R&D labs have been working on taking the technology introduced in the Dark Fire instruments to an entirely new level of performance and ease of use. The Dusk Tiger guitar will have all three of the above features in a newly enhanced version at a more affordable price!

Enormous capability and options often come at the price of having to learn how to use the many features. Gibson’s breakthrough Dark Fire introduced a full color matrix Master Control Knob to allow the player to harness the power with guitar-like movements. The guitar also enhanced the pickup toggle switch to serve as a blend control allowing the mixing of a piezo pickup with the traditional pickups. These controls allowed the player dozens of unique sounds as well as many traditional sounds, all in pure high definition analog.

Lard-er than bombs

Here's an action-packed update from the very funky Lard Brothers:

"Speaking of remixes, we did 2 for our friends who will be releasing their albums in December 2009. We retooled shoegazers Stellarium's 'Any Day Is Fine' and it will be included in their self-titled debut released next month.

Our take of indie rockers Plainsunset's 'River Song' will be out on their latest offering 'Collabor-8'. A big shout-out to MC Garuda and QTB for spitting some rhymes over our remix. The album will be released on 18 Dec if we are not wrong.

We will upload the link to download a tune from our next album soon.

Keep it phat til then."
