New Album By The Analog Girl Out Now

The Analog Girl has released her new album, "Tonight Your Love", on 18 December. This marks her third official release, with every album released on 18 December every three years to coincide with a special day - her father's birthday.

Songs on the album are a cosmic synthesis of the futuristic with the hauntingly vintage. Sentiments of love and transgressions are explored in these 10 tracks. They are also reflections of her vision of Los Angeles at night - a neon beat, while time and space jumping to retro filmscapes set in New York City. Filter Magazine's Culture Collide Festival held in Echopark, Los Angeles naturally became the perfect stage for The Analog Girl to preview tracks off the new album, performing alongside international bands like Gang Gang Dance, CSS and Asteroids Galaxy Tour. She then proceeded to master the album with Paul Gold of Salt Mastering in Brooklyn, New York - giving it its warm analogue stamp. Gold has worked on an impressive slate of records by acts such as LCD Soundsystem, Animal Collective and Washed Out.

The Zozi Launching New Album On Christmas Day

The Zozi are back and releasing their second album on Christmas Day with a launch party at Straits Records.

Staying true to their Singaporean ethics, they play a "rojak" variety of songs influenced by daily undertakings in their "not so-angst teenage life". Emerging from the dark, edgy and notorious HDB void decks, the foursome - Afiq, Syak, Wan Taugay and Nazozi - call themselves The Zozi.

The Zozi released their debut album, "Hilamony" in November 2008. The songs take their DIY sounds influenced by local '90s bands such as The Boredphucks, Force Vomit, Plainsunset and The Oddfellows, not forgetting the local legend Ramli Sarip and the late A. Ramlee. "Hilamony" has a strong mix of fast-paced punk rock sounds, upbeat reggae strums to bay-chilling ballads. All the songs were recorded at home.

This Christmas, The Zozi will launch "Hilamony Part 2". The term "Hilamony" has become a series of their songs. After a period of two years on hiatus, they are back with new vibes and tunes that can make one smile under the sun.

Event: Official Launch of The Zozi - Hilamony II! (Occupy XMAS with The ZOZI!)
Date: 25 Dec 2011
Time: 4:30pm
Venue: Straits Records, 24 Bali Lane
Opening Band: The Guilt
Entry: Free
CD - $14 / Buttons - $1 / T-shirts - $15

Natalie's Plight At The Republic Culture Centre

Natalie's Plight is launching its debut EP, "What You See Is What You Get" at Republic Polytechnic on 16 December 2011.

It was 2007 when four schoolmates came together to write music for a project that would eventually gather enough attention for some material to be professionally recorded at Sound Advice Studios. This was then presented to ex-president S. R. Nathan as he made his first visit to their new campus in 2008.

The band successfully put up two performances of their works which earned them a top project award in their cohort. Encouraged and inspired they longed to reach a place where their music could reach a wider audience. A call from the nation for one member and a need to fill in a gap in the rhythm department however, put their dreams on a hiatus.

Fast forward three years and with a new member in the form of bassist Sharime, Ashlee, Mark and Chris are now realising their dreams.

Event: Natalie's Plight "What You See Is What You Get" EP Launch
Date: 16 December 2011 (Friday)
Doors Open: 7.30pm
Venue: The Republic Cultural Centre, Studio Level 2 (9 Woodlands Ave 9)
Entry: $15 includes a copy of the EP

Dulcinea Releases Second Album

Singaporean progressive rock band Dulcinea has just released its second album titled "In The Shadow Of The Sun", three years after its 2008 debut, "The Politics Of Fear".

Formed in 2006 by Mathew Thomas and Jason Ng along with drummer Rashid Said,
Dulcinea is the name of a character in Miguel De Cervantes' novel Don Quixote. After releasing their debut album "The Politics Of Fear", Dulcinea began gigging with a full fledged line up including guitarist Paul Yong and frontman Gerard Richards.

Now, three years after the release of "The Politics Of Fear", Dulcinea is proud to release their most cohesive work yet. Progressing from the electronic and experimental sounds of the previous album, "In The Shadow Of The Sun" sees Dulcinea move towards a more organic guitar oriented sound that mixes both alternative rock music with tendencies to go off on experimental tangents.

Dulcinea will be playing at *Scape's New Year Countdown party and will be doing the album launch in February 2012.

"In The Shadow Of The Sun" is available at http://sonicblastmedia.com

Seyra At The Esplanade Concourse

This month, the series of acoustic gigs at the Esplanade Concourse features local artists going on an intimate musical journey as they share songs that have moved and inspired them.

Seyra is a singer-songwriter whose music speaks of the peculiarities and insecurities of youth, hope, existence—and love in between. Armed with a unique songwriting style and soulful voice, her indie folk-pop tunes capture the bittersweet aspects of life’s uncertainties. She writes about suburban ennui, and the mini-tragedies and triumphs of everyday life that often go unnoticed against the drudgery of living in the city. Together with her band, an experimental folk-fusion inspired outfit comprising of Khidir Osman on guitar and Melodica, Zack He on percussion and guitar, and Rupak George on bass and glockenspiel, they aim to create a unique indie sound.

Besides her original songs, Seyra will perform some of the songs from artists she has been inspired by. Expect songs by artists such as Feist, Kings of Convenience and Indonesian band The Trees and The Wild.

Date: 14 & 15 December 2011
Time: 7:15pm & 8:15pm
Venue: Esplanade Concourse

Jon Chong Interview: Beauty In The Small Things

Singapore-based singer-songwriter Jon Chong is back with the follow-up to his 2009 debut album, "State Of My Mind". His new album, "Beauty In The Small Things", is out now and Jon will be performing stripped down acoustic sets at Starbucks at the following dates and outlets:

3 December 2011, 3pm (Sat) - Raffles City
10 December 2011, 3pm (Sat) - Liat Towers
17 December 2011, 3pm (Sat) - 313@somerset

We caught up with Jon for a short interview to talk about the new release and more.

How different is "Beauty In The Small Things" from your debut album "State Of My Mind"?

Compared to “State of My Mind”, “Beauty in the Small Things” is mellower, reflects a progression in maturity and a more focused approach towards communicating lyrics and their message. Musically, the new album is more adventurous, incorporating instruments such as the mandolin and classical guitar, interesting guitar solos and even scatting which is more commonly associated with jazz. The key for me was balance and it was important that I did not deviate too far from the ‘Jon Chong’ identity - tight grooves, interesting chord-work and well-thought out lyrics, all aimed at capturing and stirring an emotional response from the listener.

What are the inspirations behind the songs and album title?

There are more songs in this album about love than the first, each inspired by a different experience such as having to cope with long-distance relationships and the willingness to do foolish things for love. Other songs speak about the thoughts I have about life such as the legacies we will leave behind, the loss of innocence and simplicity, and the challenges of dealing with negativity and doubt.

The theme song “Beauty in the Small Things” was inspired by an event that occurred in Japan while I was visiting an old friend at one of the smaller cities at the outskirts of Osaka. While walking through the beautiful town, I was affected by the eerie realization that most of the area was void of life and vibrancy with most of the young having left for the bigger cities. When we stopped by a small café run by a pleasant old lady, I sat by the window and was rather nonchalant until I saw these small ladybird ornaments stuck to the leaves of a potted plant on the ledge. I would not have been affected by it much under different circumstances, but in the context of what I had seen all day, it made me realise that there is beauty in the small things if we really slow down and take time to appreciate them. I chose this as the theme song of the album because I believe this applies to everything we do – in the pursuit of the seemingly bigger and better, let’s not lose sight of the beauty in the smaller things in our actions, words, and contrary to the often-said “no one remembers second place”, even the ones who come in last could well have a story worth telling!

How did the collaborations with hip-hop artist Neli Atiga and guitarist Edward Aguiliar come about?

Neli is a good friend who I have great admiration for with respect to his creativity and character as a person. It was a no-brainer getting Neli to lend his rapping chops for the song "Legacy" when it needed some umph to drive the message across. Coincidentally, when we recorded the rap portion, it was the day that Steve Jobs passed on and so it made the lyrics even more relevant. As for Ed, I had always been a fan ever since I saw him playing at some of the recitals at the LASALLE College of the Arts – he’s truly a humble but very talented guy. I was really glad he was able to lay down that sweet solo on Lazy Days as it gave a distinct, different feel to that song compared to the other songs in the album.

Do you think singer-songwriters are not getting enough platforms to perform compared to bands in Singapore?

I would say singer-songwriters have yet to establish themselves collectively as a movement as much as bands have over the years as evident in events such as Baybeats and other indie band festivals. It is my hope that someday, something comparable or more could be organised for singer-songwriter type artistes, or even a combination of both! Afterall, there is commonality between the dreams of all musicians here, that eventually there would be a credible platform and sustainable industry for original music produced in Singapore. From my personal experience, a great example of an initiative is what Starbucks is doing through their “Supporting our Local Talent” program which has truly made a big difference in providing a platform for singer-songwriters who have recorded EPs or albums, to be heard and seen. I hope that this is just the beginning and I believe if we carve out enough opportunities and showcase more quality music, people will take notice eventually.

As we approach the tail end of 2011, how has the year been for you and what are your hopes and plans for next year?

2011 was a good year indeed starting with a couple of memorable gigs such as Earth Hour 2011 and a road trip up to KL for a talent showcase. Most of the year though was spent on producing and recording “Beauty in the Small Things” and in retrospect the countless hours spent and pouring of emotions into the album was well worth it! The timing for the album release was also perfect with Starbucks picking it up for their Nov-Dec Christmas period; so far we have had very positive feedback both from listeners and the media. My hopes for next year are to continue promoting and performing the second album as much as I can and hopefully get more breaks with more prestigious gigs or opportunities for my music to be on other media outlets such as TV and movies. I certainly hope that my best efforts translate into a positive influence, in one way or another, for as many people as possible.

"Beauty In The Small Things" is available at the Esplanade shop and all Starbucks stores (from now till 4 January 2012). You can also order it from www.jonchong.com before 31 Dec 2011 and get a complimentary copy of “State of My Mind”. Free delivery world-wide!
